Bidding is underway for Mile High Card Co.’s Oct. 1 auction. Company president Brian Drent didn’t hesitate to call this auction Mile High’s strongest and most all-inclusive offering in its 12-year history. When asked to sum up the 1,572 lots of the auction in one word, Drent responded that the current offering is, simply, “thorough.”

After averaging more than $2 million per sale over their last three auctions, Huggins and Scott has completed preparations for its upcoming worldwide sports memorabilia catalog auction that will begin Oct. 5.

The Maryland-based company, which last year sold a single-signed Christy Mathewson baseball for $161,000 and a rare Joe Jackson/Buck Weaver autographed baseball for $69,000, will offer more than 1,400 consigned lots of vintage and modern sports cards and memorabilia in a two-day auction, with bidding being conducted by phone and Internet via the company’s website.

The phrase “saving the best for last” is an accurate description of Clean Sweep Auction’s upcoming sale, especially if you’re a collector of autographs from members of baseball’s hall of fame.

The company’s last major auction of 2008 closes Sept. 24, and company president Steve Verkman said it’s one that signature aficionados won’t want to miss.

“This sale has a big variety of material,” Verkman said. “But the heart of this auction is the baseball autographs.”
